# Why Can Fasting Glucose and HbA1c Tell Different Stories?

How can someone have a fasting glucose result that looks high while their HbA1c is within range, or see the reverse? Since the tests describe blood sugar in different ways, I’m trying to understand what clinicians make of results that don’t seem to agree.

Can timing, recent illness, or factors that affect red blood cells change the comparison? If you’ve had both tests, what questions helped you make sense of the results with your clinician?
