# Why Did the U.S. Constitution Create the Electoral College?

When the Constitution was being drafted, why did the founders settle on the **[Electoral College system](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/41433/what-is-a-major-flaw-in-the-electoral-college-system)** instead of choosing the president through a direct nationwide popular vote? I’m trying to understand which concerns shaped the debate, rather than just how electors work today.

Was the system mainly a compromise between large and small states, or were there other ideas about representation and choosing a president behind it? I’d appreciate recommendations for clear primary sources or reliable historical accounts.
