# Why Does an Android Phone Stop Receiving Security Updates While Its Hardware Still Works?

My Android phone still runs smoothly, but it no longer seems to receive security patches. I’m trying to understand what determines the end of **Android security updates**: is it the phone’s age, the processor, the manufacturer’s support policy, or something else?

Do carrier-locked models sometimes follow a different update schedule from unlocked versions of the same phone? I’d be interested in how people check the actual support window before buying a device.
