# What Does ChatGPT Memory Save, and What Stays Only in a Conversation?

I’m trying to understand the boundary between **[ChatGPT memory](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117408/when-does-chatgpt-memory-affect-a-reply-more-than-custom-instructions)** and the context of a single chat. If I mention a preference in one conversation, should I expect it to carry over to a new one, or does that depend on a separate memory setting?

I’m also unsure how edits and deletions work: if I ask ChatGPT to forget something, is that different from deleting the conversation where I shared it? What’s the clearest way to check what information it has retained?
