# Why Does Excel Turn a Long ID into Scientific Notation?

When I paste a long product code or account ID into Excel, it sometimes appears in scientific notation, and some digits may change if I convert it back. These values are identifiers, not numbers I need to calculate with.

What is Excel doing when it imports long numeric identifiers, and what’s the safest way to keep every digit intact when opening or pasting a list?
