# Why Do Manufacturers Use Sampling Instead of Testing Every Part?

When a factory produces thousands of identical parts, why might its quality team inspect a sample rather than check every single unit? I can see how full inspection takes time, but missing a faulty part could be costly too.

How do manufacturers decide how many parts to test and how often to take a sample? I’m especially curious about the trade-off between inspection cost and the risk of letting defects through, and whether the approach changes when a product is safety-critical.
