# Why Did the United States Buy Alaska from Russia?

The Alaska Purchase is sometimes described as a bargain and sometimes as a questionable decision that only looked smart later. What was the U.S. government hoping to gain when it bought Alaska from Russia in 1867?

I’d like to understand how strategic concerns, the relationship with Russia, and public opinion in the United States shaped the deal. Was the purchase widely supported at the time, or did it face serious opposition?
