# Why Can a Football Team Finish a Match with Fewer Than 11 Players?

I know teams can make substitutions, but I’ve also watched matches where a side ended with fewer than 11 players on the pitch. It’s not always obvious whether that happened because of injuries, red cards and substitutions, or some combination of them.

What are the rules for continuing a match when a team has lost players? Is there a minimum number required, and does that threshold work the same way across football competitions?
