# Why Does a New SSD Show Less Space Than Its Advertised Capacity?

I installed a new SSD advertised as 1 TB, but the usable space shown by my computer is noticeably lower. I expected some difference, but I’m not sure how much is normal.

How much of that gap comes from the way storage is measured, and how much might be taken up by formatting or system partitions? At what point should I suspect that the drive has a problem rather than just a different reported capacity?
