# Why Does Claude Lose Track of Instructions in a Long Conversation?

I’ve noticed that in a [long Claude conversation](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162133/claude-says-conversation-is-too-long-heres-how-to-fix-it), it may follow a formatting rule for several replies and then quietly stop applying it. Sometimes an earlier detail from the discussion seems to disappear, even though it is still visible in the chat.

Is this mainly a context-window issue, or can the way a conversation is structured make instructions easier for Claude to retain? I’m interested in what other people have observed when using it for ongoing work.
