# Why Do Phone Photos Look Grainy in Low Light Even With Night Mode?

My phone’s night mode makes dark scenes brighter, but the photos often come out grainy or smeared, especially if a person or pet moves during the shot. The preview can look fine, so I only notice the problem afterward.

Is the phone combining several exposures, raising the image brightness, or doing something else that affects detail? I’m curious whether this is mostly a sensor limitation or if settings and how I hold the phone make a meaningful difference.
