# Why Can a Manufacturing Line’s Defect Rate Change Between Shifts?

We see a noticeably different defect rate on the same production line depending on the shift, even though the product specification and machines are unchanged. The variation is small on some days and quite large on others.

How do manufacturers usually separate operator-related variation from changes in materials, machine setup, or inspection practice? I’m especially interested in what data to compare across shifts before assuming the issue comes down to training.
