# Why Does an NVMe SSD Slow Down During a Long File Copy?

My NVMe drive starts a large file transfer at a very high speed, then drops sharply partway through. The slowdown is repeatable, but the drive still has plenty of free space and the files copy successfully.

Could the speed change be related to the drive’s cache, temperature, or the disk the files are coming from? I’m trying to understand **NVMe sustained write speed** and how to tell a normal drop during a long transfer from a drive or cooling problem.
