# Why Did Interstate Highway Routes Cut Through Some U.S. Neighborhoods?

When I look at maps of U.S. cities, some interstate routes seem to divide older neighborhoods, while other parts of the same city were left largely untouched. Was that mostly a matter of engineering and available land, or did local politics and the way routes were selected play a larger role?

I’m especially interested in how planners weighed travel time against the effects on residents and businesses. What factors explain why **interstate highway routes** were built through certain communities, and how did those choices vary from one city to another?
