# Why Isn’t There a Lunar Eclipse Every Time the Moon Is Full?

I understand that a lunar eclipse happens when Earth’s shadow falls across the Moon, but that makes me wonder why it doesn’t happen at every full moon. The basic alignment seems like it should occur regularly.

Is the Moon’s orbit tilted enough that it usually passes above or below Earth’s shadow? I’d appreciate a clear explanation of how the orbital geometry affects when an eclipse is possible.
