# Why Does an Electric Vehicle Lose So Much Range in Cold Weather?

My EV’s estimated range drops noticeably during winter, even on days when I’m making the same commute and driving at similar speeds. The drop seems bigger on short trips, when the cabin heater is on, but the displayed estimate also changes before I’ve driven very far.

How much of a winter range loss comes from heating the cabin, and how much comes from the battery itself being cold? I’d like to understand what influences **cold-weather EV range** and whether the dashboard estimate reflects a lasting change or just current conditions.
