# Why Can an AI Search Tool Cite a Source but Misstate Its Main Point?

I’ve noticed that some [AI search tool](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117498/do-ai-search-tools-treat-a-pib-release-as-independent-confirmation)s attach a relevant-looking citation to an answer, but the linked page seems to support only part of the claim—or says something more qualified. That makes it hard to tell whether the problem is in how the page was read, how the answer was summarized, or how the citation was matched.

What causes an AI tool to misrepresent a cited source, and what’s a reliable way to check whether a citation actually backs up a specific sentence?
