# Can a Brand Reuse Customer Comments in Paid Social Ads Without Asking First?

I keep seeing brands turn customer comments into ad creatives, sometimes with the commenter’s name or profile photo visible. If someone posted a positive comment publicly, is that enough permission to use it in customer comments in paid ads, or should the brand get explicit consent first?

I’m also curious whether the answer changes when the comment is edited, quoted without a name, or taken from a private group. How do marketers handle this without making a useful testimonial feel intrusive?
