# Why Was India’s Constitution Adopted on 26 November but Enforced on 26 January?

I understand that the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, but it came into force on 26 January 1950. Why were those dates different rather than having the Constitution take effect as soon as it was adopted?

Was the gap mainly needed for administrative preparation, or did 26 January carry a particular political meaning for the people drafting the Constitution? I’m looking for the historical context behind the choice, not just the dates to memorize.
