# Why Did India Reorganize State Boundaries Around Language in 1956?

I’m trying to understand the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 beyond the basic explanation that states were redrawn along linguistic lines. Why did the central government decide that this was the right moment to make such large changes, and what concerns did it have about creating states based on language?
