# Why Does Earth’s Atmosphere Look Like Such a Thin Blue Line From Space?

In photos taken from orbit, Earth’s atmosphere often appears as a narrow blue edge around the planet. From the ground, the sky seems to stretch across the whole view, so the thin line in those images is striking.

How thick is the visible layer compared with Earth’s size, and what makes it look blue from that viewpoint? I’m also curious whether the line looks very different from low Earth orbit than it would from a spacecraft farther away.
