# Why Do Some Mangoes Ripen Unevenly After They’re Picked?

I bought a batch of mangoes that felt ready after a few days on the counter, but the fruit was soft near one end and still firm and sour closer to the seed. It has happened with more than one mango, so I’m wondering whether this is just a normal part of ripening or a sign they were picked too early.

What causes mangoes to **ripen unevenly after harvest**? Does the way they’re stored at home make a difference, or can the fruit’s variety and maturity when picked explain why one side is ready before the other?
