# Why Does My Windows Laptop Keep Forgetting My Monitor’s Refresh Rate?

My Windows 11 laptop is connected to a 144 Hz external monitor through a USB-C dock. After the laptop wakes from sleep, motion looks noticeably less smooth, even though Windows still seems to recognize the display. I sometimes have to open the display settings and select the higher refresh rate again.

Could this be a Windows display profile issue, a graphics driver problem, or a limitation of the dock? I’d be interested to hear what settings or tests helped others track down a similar **external monitor refresh rate** problem.
