# When Does 3D Printing Make More Sense Than CNC Machining for a Small Production Run?

I need a small batch of custom parts, and both CNC machining and 3D printing seem plausible. The part has a few tight-fitting features, but it doesn’t need a polished appearance. I’m less concerned with making a prototype quickly than with keeping the total cost reasonable if I order dozens rather than thousands.

For **low-volume production**, what usually tips the decision toward one process: material strength, tolerances, setup costs, or the shape of the part? I’d also like to know when it’s worth getting quotes for both.
