# Why Can a Cough Linger for Weeks After a Cold Has Mostly Passed?

After a cold, I sometimes feel fine otherwise but keep coughing for a few weeks. It’s especially noticeable at night or when I go outside in cold air. I’m wondering how people tell the difference between a lingering cough during recovery and one that deserves a medical check.

Are there particular changes in the cough, accompanying symptoms, or length of time that clinicians usually ask about? I know a community discussion can’t diagnose the cause, but it would help to understand what details are useful to track before speaking with a healthcare professional.
