# Why Can OpenAI Give Different Answers to the Same Prompt in Separate Chats?

I sometimes start a fresh chat, paste in the exact same prompt, and get an answer with a different structure or emphasis. The facts may be similar, but the response can feel noticeably different.

How much of that variation comes from model settings such as temperature, and how much comes from context carried within a conversation or changes to the model itself? If I need repeatable results from the OpenAI API, which settings should I check first?
