# What Causes CNC Tool Chatter Even When the Setup Looks Correct?

We’re getting a repeating wave pattern and a harsh sound during a CNC milling operation, but the tool, material, and programmed feeds are all within their usual specifications. The issue is inconsistent: one setup runs acceptably, while another starts chattering on what should be the same job.

When you troubleshoot **CNC tool chatter**, what do you inspect beyond the obvious tool wear? I’m wondering how much can come from workholding stiffness, tool overhang, spindle condition, or the interaction between cutting parameters and the machine.
