# Why Does My Windows Laptop Lose Battery After Shutdown?

I shut my Windows laptop down from the Start menu before bed, but it still loses a noticeable amount of battery overnight. On a couple of occasions, the case has even felt slightly warm in the morning.

How can I tell whether this is related to **Windows Modern Standby**, a shutdown setting, or a connected device waking the laptop? Is there a particular Windows report or setting worth checking first?
