# How Do Astronomers Estimate the Age of a Star?

Stars are usually too far away for anyone to watch them change over a human lifetime, so I’m curious how astronomers put an age on one. Is the estimate based mainly on its brightness and temperature, or can its chemical makeup provide clues too?

I’ve also come across **stellar age estimates** based on star clusters and oscillations inside a star. How do those methods fit together, and how uncertain can the age be for an individual star?
