# Can Two People With the Same BMI Have Very Different Health Risks?

Two people can have the same height and weight, but very different builds, activity levels, and medical histories. How useful is BMI for comparing their health risks?

I’d like to understand what BMI can and cannot indicate on its own, and which other details clinicians might consider before drawing conclusions. For example, does muscle mass or where body fat is carried change how the number should be interpreted?
