# How Did India’s Constituent Assembly Balance State Autonomy With a Strong Centre?

While reading about the framing of India’s Constitution, I was struck by how much the debate involved dividing authority between the Union and the states. The final structure gives the Centre substantial powers, but it also preserves elected state governments and a federal system.
