# How Does Perplexity Decide When to Search the Web?

When I ask Perplexity a question, some answers include fresh web sources while others seem to rely more on the model’s existing knowledge. What determines whether it searches the web, and can the wording of a prompt change that choice?

I’m also curious how this affects answers about fast-changing topics, such as software releases or current events.
