# Why Do Electric Vehicles Lose So Much Range in Cold Weather?

For EV owners in colder regions, how much range loss is typical once temperatures drop below freezing? I’ve seen people report very different results, even for similar-sized cars.

Is the variation mostly down to cabin heating, [battery temperature](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/95825/why-are-there-high-temperature-and-battery-problems-after-updating-the-mac-os-to-catalina), short trips, or how the vehicle is parked and charged? I’m especially curious whether a winter range estimate should be compared with the car’s official rating or with its own summer driving range.
