# Why Do Pulse Oximeter Readings Change Between Fingers?

I sometimes get noticeably different oxygen saturation readings when I move a pulse oximeter from one finger to another, even though I take the measurements a minute apart. The device seems to fit properly on both fingers.

Can things like hand temperature, movement, circulation, or nail polish explain the difference? I’m also wondering how much variation is normal and when a changing reading is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
