# Why Can’t Earth Teams Drive a Mars Rover in Real Time?

When I watch footage from a [Mars rover](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/81750/nasa-indian-scientists-develop-mars-rover-batteries), it’s easy to imagine an operator steering it from a control room as the scene unfolds. But the distance between Earth and Mars seems like it would make that kind of live control difficult.

How do rover teams plan and send driving instructions, and what happens if the rover encounters something unexpected before the next set of commands arrives? I’m especially curious how they balance careful planning with the need to explore unfamiliar terrain.
