# Why Did the United States Choose the Electoral College Over a Direct Presidential Vote?

I’m trying to understand the original reasoning behind the Electoral College, rather than just how it operates in modern elections. What concerns or compromises led the people writing the U.S. Constitution to choose electors instead of a nationwide popular vote for president?

Did the system reflect practical limits of the time, disagreements between large and small states, or other political considerations? I’d also like to know which parts of the original debate still help explain the system today.
