# Why Did India Choose Different Methods to Integrate Its Princely States?

After independence in 1947, the princely states did not all join the Indian Union through the same process. Some accessions were relatively straightforward, while others involved negotiation, public pressure, or military action.

What shaped those different outcomes? I’m trying to understand how geography, the ruler’s decision, local political movements, and the new government’s priorities affected integration in cases such as Hyderabad, Junagadh, and Kashmir. Which factors mattered most, and where do historians disagree?
