# Why Did the U.S. Interstate Highway System Cut Through Urban Neighborhoods?

The U.S. interstate system is often discussed as a major public works and transportation project, but its routes also reshaped many cities. Some highways passed through established neighborhoods, displacing residents and changing local businesses and street connections.

How were routes actually chosen under the **Interstate Highway Act**? I’m interested in how federal planning, local decisions, and the goals of faster travel came together—and why some **urban neighborhoods** bore much more of the disruption than others. Was that pattern mainly a consequence of engineering and cost, or were political and racial inequalities also part of the route decisions?
