# When Does a Football Referee Play Advantage After a Foul?

I’ve seen a referee signal advantage after a foul, let the attacking team continue, and then bring play back when the move breaks down. In other matches, play carries on and the referee never returns to the original foul.

What does the referee consider when deciding whether the fouled team has gained a real benefit from continuing? I’m also unsure how long the referee can wait before calling the original foul, and whether the same principle applies to different kinds of fouls.
