# How Did U.S. Factories Shift from Cars to Wartime Production in World War II?

I’m trying to understand how quickly American manufacturers changed what they made after the United States entered World War II. The familiar example is car companies turning to aircraft, engines, and other military equipment, but that sounds like more than simply switching an assembly line to a different product.

How were factory layouts, suppliers, machinery, and workers adapted for wartime production? I’m also curious about the role of government contracts and whether civilian manufacturing stopped entirely or continued alongside military output.
