# Why Do Some Mangoes Develop Black Patches Before They Soften?

I bought a box of mangoes that were still firm, but a few developed dark patches on the skin before they softened. The patches are mostly on one side, and I’m not sure whether this points to bruising, storage conditions, or a problem inside the fruit.

How can you tell ordinary surface damage from spoilage, especially when the mango is still firm? I’d also like to know whether temperature changes during transport can cause this kind of patching.
