# How Can I Separate CNC Tool Wear From Spindle Thermal Drift?

We’re seeing a gradual dimensional shift during longer CNC runs. The first parts after startup are close to nominal, then measurements drift as the machine stays in operation. Replacing the cutter seems to help sometimes, but not consistently.

What measurements or controlled checks can help distinguish **tool wear** from **spindle thermal drift**? I’m looking for a practical way to isolate the cause without changing several offsets or process settings at once.
