# Why Could Princely States Choose Accession in 1947, and What Limited That Choice?

When British rule ended in 1947, princely states were told to accede to India or Pakistan, while some rulers initially considered remaining independent. I’m trying to understand how much freedom those rulers actually had in practice.

What legal and political factors shaped the decision to sign an Instrument of Accession? I’m especially curious about how geography, public opinion, and pressure from the departing British authorities affected the choices available to each state.
