# Can a Blood Pressure Cuff That Barely Fits Make Home Readings Unreliable?

I bought an upper-arm blood pressure monitor, but my arm measurement is close to the upper end of the cuff’s printed size range. The cuff fastens, although it feels tight even before inflation. My home readings have also been higher than readings taken at the clinic.

I don’t want to assume the difference is caused by the equipment. How can I check whether blood pressure cuff sizing is affecting the measurements?

- Is being within the stated arm-circumference range enough, or do the fit and position markers need separate checks?
- Can I use a larger cuff from another brand, or does it need to be approved for this monitor?
- Would bringing the device to an appointment help distinguish a measurement problem from a genuine difference in blood pressure?

I’m asking about accurate [home blood pressure monitoring](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301017/blood-pressure-monitoring-at-home), not whether I should change any treatment based on these readings.
