# Why Did GA4 Direct Traffic Rise After We Added a Consent Banner?

We recently introduced a cookie consent banner, and our GA4 reports changed noticeably. Total recorded sessions fell, but the share attributed to Direct increased. Our email and paid social campaigns are still running with the same UTM naming conventions.

## What I’m trying to distinguish

Could this reflect a real change in traffic, or could our consent implementation be affecting which visits are recorded and how they are attributed?

- The banner appears on the first visit.
- Some campaign landing pages redirect before the final page loads.
- I haven’t yet confirmed whether campaign parameters remain available when someone accepts consent on a later page.

Which checks would help distinguish **GA4 session attribution** issues from a simple change in the mix of measurable visitors? I’m particularly unsure how to test **UTM parameter persistence** alongside consent timing without collecting analytics data before the visitor’s permitted consent state allows it.

I’m looking for a diagnostic order, not a way to bypass the banner.
