# How Can I Recover My X Account After Losing Access to My Authenticator App?

I replaced my phone and wiped the old one before checking whether my authenticator accounts had transferred. I still know my X password and can access the email address attached to the account, but signing in asks for a code I can no longer generate.

I cannot find my backup codes. There may still be an active X session on my laptop, although I have not signed out or changed any security settings there.

**What is the safest order to try the available recovery options without losing that remaining session?** Specifically:

- Can an existing session help me change authenticator-based two-factor authentication, or will that also require the missing code?
- Does access to the registered email address help with account recovery when the password is not the problem?
- If I need to contact support, what information should I prepare without sharing passwords or authentication secrets?

I am looking for the official X account recovery process, not third-party recovery services.
