# How Was India’s Constituent Assembly Representative Without a Direct Public Election?

While preparing for UPSC, I read that representatives from British Indian provinces in the Constituent Assembly were elected by provincial legislative assemblies rather than directly by the public. Those provincial assemblies themselves came from elections held under a restricted franchise.

## What does “representative” mean in this context?

I’m struggling to connect the **election of the Constituent Assembly** with its authority to draft a Constitution for everyone. Was its representative character understood mainly through the parties and communities involved, or through some other basis?

How did representation from princely states differ from provincial representation, and how did Partition change the Assembly’s composition?

For an exam answer, I’d like to distinguish the limitations of its selection process from the broader question of its democratic legitimacy, without suggesting that it was elected through universal adult franchise.
