# Why Does Deleting a Photo From My Phone Also Remove It From Google Photos?

I’m trying to free up space on my Android phone without losing photos that have already been backed up. In Google Photos, the pictures show as backed up, but deleting one through the app also seems to remove it when I check my library in a browser.

I expected the cloud copy to stay. Now I’m unsure whether **Delete**, **Delete from device**, and **Free up space** do different things, or whether the result depends on which gallery app I use.

- How can I remove only the local copies while keeping the online library intact?
- Will those photos still appear in the app, and will viewing them require an internet connection?
- What should I check before clearing several gigabytes at once?

I’d appreciate an explanation of how Google Photos backup and sync affect deletion. I haven’t emptied the bin while I work this out.
