# Why Are the Starting Positions Staggered in a 400-Metre Race?

Watching a 400-metre race, the runner in the outside lane seems to start well ahead of the runner nearest the inside. I understand that the outer lanes have longer curves, but how is the exact offset calculated?

For **staggered starts in athletics**, is distance measured along the centre of each lane or along a specified running line? Since athletes can move slightly within their lanes, I am also wondering how officials define an equal 400 metres for everyone.

And when commentators say someone is “leading” before the runners reach the final straight, can they really judge that from the picture, or is the stagger still making their positions misleading?
