# Does Changing a Published URL Slug Hurt SEO If I Add a Redirect?

I’m considering changing the **[URL slug](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/334268/perfecting-your-url-slug-a-comprehensive-guide)** of an older page because its current address is awkward and no longer matches the page title. If I redirect the old URL to the new one, should search rankings and existing links usually carry over, or can changing a URL still cause a temporary loss of traffic?

Are there cases where it’s better to leave the original address alone even if the slug could be improved?
